Metal Braces FAQ

How long does treatment last?

Each patient's individual case will be examined and carefully planned byb our dentists. Our planning ensures optimum results. Orthodontic treatment using metal braces generally takes anywhere from 12 to 24 months.

Does it hurt to eat with braces?

Discomfort and some pain are experienced by most patients at the beginning of orthodontic treatment with metal braces. This discomfort can be experienced when adjusting and when eating and talking. It takes many days, and sometimes weeks, to get used to the change. For patients who are anxious about this experience we recommend clear braces orthodontic treatment.

Will my teeth straight once the metal braces are taken off?

Only if the patient follows doctors orders! Once metal braces are removed you will be required to wear a clear, plastic retainer which keeps your teeth in place. This must be worn for life, or as long as you would like your teeth to remain straight. Initially a retainer must be worn daily and nightly. Gradually you reduce the amount of time you wear your retainer up until you only need to wear it while sleeping.

Does having metal braces affect what I can eat?

Yes. When metal braces are first applied to the patients teeth there is a period of time where only non-solid foods should be consumed. This gives the patient time to get used to their new braces. After the initial period, hard, chunky, sticky and chewy foods cannot be consumed for the duration of treatment
